Job Description
A restaurant steward or waiter's core responsibility is to ensure a positive dining experience for guests. This includes welcoming guests, taking orders, serving food and drinks, and maintaining a clean and organized dining area. They also handle tasks like setting tables, clearing dishes, and assisting with other service-related duties.
Detailed Responsibilities:
Customer Service & Interaction:
- Greeting and Seating: Welcoming guests, guiding them to their tables, and providing menus.
- Order Taking: Accurately taking food and drink orders, often using point-of-sale (POS) systems.
- Serving Food & Drinks: Delivering orders to tables, ensuring proper presentation and handling any special requests.
- Providing Information: Answering questions about the menu, specials, and restaurant services.
- Addressing Complaints: Handling customer concerns and escalating issues to management when necessary.
- Maintaining Guest Satisfaction: Ensuring guests have a pleasant and enjoyable dining experience.
Food & Beverage Service:
- Setting Tables: Preparing tables with appropriate linens, cutlery, glassware, and condiments.
- Clearing Tables: Removing used dishes, glasses, and silverware promptly and efficiently.
- Assisting Servers: Helping servers with tasks like refilling drinks, delivering food, and stocking service stations.
- Maintaining Cleanliness: Ensuring the dining area, including tables, floors, and restrooms, are clean and presentable.
- Dishwashing: Cleaning dishes, glassware, and silverware using appropriate methods.
- Stocking: Ensuring service stations are adequately stocked with necessary supplies.
Other Duties:
- Opening/Closing Tasks: Assisting with the opening and closing procedures of the restaurant.
- Hygiene & Safety: Adhering to all food safety and sanitation guidelines.
- Teamwork: Collaborating with other staff members to ensure smooth and efficient service.
- Problem-Solving: Addressing any issues that arise during service and finding appropriate solutions.
- Flexibility: Being able to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing situations.
