Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Blood Collection:
- Drawing blood from patients using venipuncture or other approved techniques.
- Patient Preparation:
- Explaining the procedure to patients, addressing concerns, and ensuring their comfort and safety.
- Sample Handling:
- Properly labeling blood collection tubes, storing samples according to protocol, and preparing them for transportation to the laboratory.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintaining accurate patient records related to blood draws, including test orders, sample information, and any adverse reactions.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensuring that all equipment used for blood collection is properly maintained, sanitized, and readily available.
- Safety Compliance:
- Adhering to all safety and infection control protocols to prevent contamination and exposure.
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- Effectively communicating with patients, explaining procedures, and addressing any questions or concerns.
- Teamwork:
- Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, such as nurses, physicians, and laboratory personnel.
Educational and Certification Requirements:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent:
- A high school diploma or GED is typically required as a minimum educational foundation.
- Phlebotomy Training Program:
- Completion of a recognized phlebotomy training program is often a prerequisite.
- Phlebotomy Certification:
- Certification from a recognized body, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), is often preferred or required.
